About Us

New York Drawing School was an arts promotion and teaching project that involved instructing and marketing drawing classes to beginning, intermediate and advanced students in a myriad of mediums. It was originally founded by NY artists and instructors Melissa Staiger and Sarah Schrift. NYDS took place at Arts@Renaissance through St. Nick’s Alliance in Williamsburg, Brooklyn from August of 2012 to February of 2014.

Who are Melissa Staiger and Sarah Schrift?

Melissa Staiger holds a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Pratt Institute. She also studies the holistic work of Polarity Therapy and incorporates energetic ideas into her classes. Sarah Schrift holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Columbia University. Schrift also is a songwriter and musician. An understanding of music compliments Sarah’s teaching. Both Sarah and Melissa teach art, create their own work and exhibit.

“We aim to teach our art courses as guided explorations. This way we can help each student tap into his or her unique vision as a creative person.”

–Melissa Staiger

“What I strive for in teaching is to give students the tools they need to  express  themselves. I’m not interested in creating a carbon copy of myself as an artist.  Everyone has their own voice, I hope to aid in turning the volume up on that voice.”

Feedback from our students:

“I took my first drawing class at the NYDS last month, and it was an absolute joy! I haven't taken an art class since high school, but through the guidance of the teacher I really felt that I was capable of making some great art. The classes here are wonderful because it doesn't matter your talent or skill level. I took a charcoal class with Sarah Schrift (whose resume speaks for itself). She was helpful and informative without being judgmental. I felt very comfortable and surprisingly proud of myself afterwards, even willingly sharing my work with others!  I will definitely be taking another class again soon!” – Pam S.

“As a beginner, I found the class very informative and inspiring. Any apprehension I had going into the class quickly disappeared with the enthusiasm Sarah and Melissa brought to their lessons. Each class begins with a brief overview of an artist. Sarah and Melissa would break down the artist's technique and the perspective they employed to create their works. As someone who always appreciated art, but never understood the craft that went into it, I loved these lessons. Along with improving my drawing technique as an amateur, I also gained a new appreciation for the masters!  Strongly recommended.” – Clay R.
